Proof that Obamacare will improve Louisianan livesLouisiana Progress

Our partners at the Center for American Progress have updated us with some fantastic news about the Affordable Care Act that I wanted to share with you. While our Governor remains obstinately opposed to taking full advantage of the ACA, Louisiana will still feel some of the positive effects of this remarkable legislation. The ACA is a fairly complex set of regulations and mandates, so here are some quick facts that you need to know:
- Beginning October 1st, people in every state across the US will be able to choose new affordable health insurance options via a Health Insurance Marketplace, also called an insurance exchange. Each state must have an HIM, but must decide whether it will control the exchange or allow the federal government to do so.
- Louisiana has opted out of being in control of its Health Insurance Marketplace, so the federal government will operate our exchange instead.
- Insurance exchanges enable consumers to shop for the competitively priced health insurance plan that works best for them and their families.
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Louisiana's largest private health insurance provider, estimates that two-thirds of its almost 1 million customers who buy their own policies will pay the same premiums or less for better coverage under ACA.
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield will expand their health coverage availability to all 64 of Louisiana's parishes.
It is difficult to understand why the Governor has been so resistant to such a wonderful change for so many of his citizens, but it is a relief to know that despite his opposition, we will not lose out on some of the most important outcomes of the President's plan. As always, we will keep you updated as further information comes in regarding how the ACA is helping keep Louisiana families healthy and prosperous.
Yours in progress,
Carrie Wooten
